Maropeng and iHominin offer budding palaeontologists a rare opportunity to explore a 1.5-million-year-old fossil site. Cooper’s Cave, 1.2km from the famous Sterkfontein Caves near Johannesburg, is a newly discovered fossil site where several species of animals and a number of stone tools have been found.  The day’s activities include a walking tour conducted by Christine Steininger, the only woman in South Africa to hold a permit for an active dig, an interactive fossil and site talk, exploring a cave, a chance to look for fossils, and learning how to make stone tools. Jersey, torch, hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothes, walking shoes and camera are essential. This event is a must for adults and children with an interest in palaeontology and archaeology.
The tour starts at 09:00 from the Sterkfontein Caves and costs R350 per person which includes a picnic lunch. Guests are also able to combine the event with an overnight stay at the luxurious Maropeng Boutique Hotel for R1 207 per person sharing per night. Swartkrans has yielded the largest sample of Paranthropus robustus, and is also the site where the earliest evidence of the use of controlled fire in Southern Africa was discovered, dating back 1-million years. This tour is suitable for adults only and costs are R350 per person which includes a light picnic lunch.
