MAROPENG

JUNE 18 - SWARTKRANS WALKING TOUR

Swartkrans, one of the Cradle’s richest fossil sites, is usually closed to the public. But on these tours, small groups will have a rare opportunity to observe an active palaeontological dig and will be guided around the site by scientist Morris Sutton, who is currently excavating there.

The Magaliesberg Biosphere Initiative Group (M.B.I.G) is actively encouraging the South African government to register the Magaliesberg Biosphere under UNESCO. Our growing membership represents the Biosphere community – the people who live or work or are in any way involved with this national treasure. By becoming a member of the Magaliesberg Biosphere you will help to ensure that the this area is used and conserved in perpetuity and that the government has a sound foundation on which to base its application for UNESCO recognition.

THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND

The Cradle of Humankind Site comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossillised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. The dolomite in which the caves formed, started out as coral reefs growing in a worm shallow sea about 2.3 billion years ago.

The Cradle of Humankind site lies mainly in the Gauteng province with a small extension into the neighboring North West Provence, and covers 47 000 hectares of land mostly privately owned. The Cradle of Humankind Site comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossillised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids.
