21 May 2011: Stargazing – You are here

Have you ever tried to imagine how big the universe is? Its very scale is overwhelming when we realise that planet Earth is a tiny drop in the ocean of endless galaxies.

Learn more about our fascinating universe with Vincent Nettmann, Maropeng’s resident astronomer, at this month’s Stargazing event. The evening begins with sunset drinks on the Tumulus Restaurant deck, followed by an illustrated talk and delicious buffet carvery dinner.

End the evening by gazing up into the night sky through a range of large-aperture telescopes. The event costs R190 per adult and R90 per child (4 – 14 years) and includes dinner.

4 June 2011: Cooper’s Cave Picnic and Walking Tour
This walking tour offers visitors an interactive fossil and site talk as well as a chance to explore a cave, look for fossils and learn how to make stone tools at a relatively new 1.5 million-year old fossil site. A jersey, torch, hat, sunscreen. comfortable clothes and walking shoes and camera are essential. This is a must for adults and children with an interest in palaeontology and archaeology. The event commences at 09:00 and will take place at the Sterkfontein Caves. The cost is R350 per person or R1350 per person sharing per night, which includes dinner, bed and breakfast as well as the Cooper’s Cave picnic and walking tour.

CRADLE OF HUMANKIND

The Cradle of Humankind Site comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossillised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. The dolomite in which the caves formed, started out as coral reefs growing in a worm shallow sea about 2.3 billion years ago.

The Cradle of Humankind site lies mainly in the Gauteng province with a small extension into the neighboring North West Provence, and covers 47 000 hectares of land mostly privately owned.
