MAROPENG to host special Women’s Day luncheon with guest speaker Christine Steininger
Maropeng, in the Cradle of Humankind, is holding a Women’s Day luncheon on August 9, 2010, to celebrate the strength, sacrifices and love of the country’s mothers, sisters and daughters. Well-known palaeoanthropologist Christine Steininger will be the guest speaker at this decadent affair. She will deliver a talk entitled “Dirt and Makeup: Maintaining Your Femininity in a Man’s World”.
Steininger is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand and has the distinction of being the only woman in South Africa to hold a permit for a live dig.
She has, over the years, collaborated with researchers in South Africa and abroad, participated in fieldwork at other sites in the country, been invited to workshops, and presented numerous papers at conferences.
The Women’s Day event will start at 12h00, with guests being treated to a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival. A favourite course among many women, dessert, will be served first – with a beautifully set dessert table taking centre stage. The indulgent treats on offer will satiate even the most ravenous of chocolate appetites and will be made only of local ingredients, promising a deliciously South African smorgasbord of sweetness.
The main meal at the Maropeng Boutique Hotel will be a light but lovely lunch, with a choice between an Asian-style kingklip dish and chicken supreme served with apple and walnut risotto.
After lunch, Steininger will delve into the not-so-glamorous side of palaeoanthropology – which involves a lot of dust, dirt and mud. She will also talk about her experience as a woman in the profession, about maintaining one’s identity and femininity in a world dominated by men.
The lunch and talk cost R295 per person. Please note that bookings are essential.
Maropeng means “returning to the place of origin” in seTswana, the main indigenous language in this area of South Africa. The Cradle of Humankind is an easy drive of about one hour from Johannesburg or Pretoria. Guests can explore the Maropeng Visitor Centre and its impressive exhibition on the day.
